The Dane County Sheriff’s Office offers an annual Citizen’s Academy to anyone 18 years or older, living or working in Dane County. The Citizen’s Academy is a branch of the Dane County Citizen Corps, and has been in existence since 2006.
The Sheriff’s Office Citizen’s Academy offers community members an inside look at the Dane County Sheriff’s Office. The application process is announced in June each year, and 15-20 applicants are chosen after a basic background check has been completed. The class meets one evening per week for 11 weeks at various locations around Dane County.
Participants get a hands-on introduction to the four divisions of the Sheriff’s Office. The program includes a tour of the Dane County Jail, the Dane County Courthouse, firearms education at the Law Enforcement Training Center’s shooting range, a ride-along with the lake’s patrol deputies, and more.
The open application period will start sometime after Memorial Day, and the application form will be made available on-line at that time. So check back mid-May for updated information on the application process.
