Compliments

We are proud of the good relationship we share with the community. There are times when our employees go above and beyond the call of duty. We appreciate it when the good deeds of our employees are recognized. Too often we are remembered for the traffic tickets we issue or the arrests we make, and not for the helping hands we extend.

If an employee of the Sheriff’s Office provides service that you feel should be commended, please feel free to call it to our attention. The Sheriff will share your compliment with the employee and place a copy in the employee's personnel file. Your compliments boost morale and encourage our employees to continue to provide exceptional service.

An Online Citizen Compliment/Complaint Form is available here for your convenience.

You can also download a pdf of the Citizen Complaint/Compliment Form.

Written compliments may be dropped off at any of our work locations or can be mailed to:

Dane County Sheriff's Office
Attn: Executive Services Captain

Complaint Procedure

We believe it is necessary for our conduct to meet the highest ethical standards of the law enforcement profession. If our performance fails to meet your expectations, we welcome your feedback. It is the policy of the Dane County Sheriff's Office to openly encourage any person with a complaint to bring that complaint to the attention of our administration. It is your legal right to file a complaint. Complaints may be submitted in a variety of ways.

The Sheriff's Office Officer in Charge (OIC) may be contacted at (608) 284- 6155. The OIC is on duty between the hours of 2:30 p.m. and 7:00 a.m. seven days a week.

A complaint may be filed in person at any Sheriff's Office work location during normal business hours. Precinct supervisors are typically at their precincts during shift changes: 3 p.m., 11 p.m., and 7 a.m.

To speak to a Sheriff's Office supervisor, you may also call the Dane County Communications Center at (608) 255- 2345. A dispatcher will ask you to identify yourself and to provide a phone number where you may be reached. A Sheriff's Office supervisor will return your call promptly, usually within one hour.

An Online Citizen Complaint/Compliment Form is available here for your convenience.

You can also download a pdf of the Citizen Complaint/Compliment Form.

Written complaints are also accepted and can be dropped off at any of our work locations or can be mailed to:

Dane County Sheriff's Office
Attn: Executive Services Captain
115 W. Doty Street
Madison, WI 53703

All written complaints are assigned to a supervisor for investigation. All complaints are also forwarded to the Sheriff. After the investigation has been completed, the citizen who filed the complaint is informed of the outcome of his/her complaint.

NOTE: This procedure does not replace the jail inmate grievance procedure. Complaints from jail inmates must be processed through the formal Inmate Grievance Procedure.
